CHEAP TABLET PC’s—A NEW FACE FOR OLD IDEAS!

Cheap tablet PC’s are giving a new face to old ideas and concepts of work, in all its forms, by changing the way people view and work on computers. Tablet PC’s are the newest computer offering in size and functionality. These may even represent what Apple Computer President and CEO Steve Jobs calls the “post PC era” when referring to their potential and functionality at the D-8 Conference.

The world of the computer and its many hardware choices is changing at a rapid pace. Gone are the days of room-sized computers. For work-place efficiency, they were first replaced by smaller machines, each feeding “dumb” terminals which were linked together and then hooked to the “brain” of the system.

Next, that bulky and awkwardly-sized equipment was replaced by more versatile desktop PC’s. The advent of the desktop units meant that each employee used a stand-alone machine which could be networked with the other PC’s in the office, whether on-site or off-site. Soon, technology saw the advent of the portable computer, which over time was surpassed in portability and efficiency by the netbook and laptop computers of today.

The use of the PDA, or personal digital assistant arose in the late 1980’s, giving persons the capability of the first desktop computers; they were devices small enough to fit in the standard front shirt pocket. Mobile telephones also began to command the interest and spending habits of the modern worker, and these began to appear in tandem with the PDA’s, culminating in the modern “smart phones” so popular today.

These new smart phones operate for their users as small computers; most models of the smart phones are so versatile that they can perform the job of schedule for their owners, keeping track of their appointment, calendar manager, list-maker, communications tool, budget planner, word processor, gaming station, and in the case of some models, even as a way of turning off or on appliances or lights in the home or office or program your DVR.

We are now seeing yet another stellar offering entering into the techno-populated computer arena: the PC tablet. It is basically a combination of a PDA and a notebook computer. As one commentator has said, it is basically “a perfect gizmo for those who want mobility and technology.” While it does not have the capacity of functioning as a phone, that technology may not be far behind.

Although the PC Tablet has been around in some form for years, it has become newly popular by certain recently released or re-engineered and re-introduced offerings which have put the PC Tablet at the forefront of computing technology. With its flat presentation and full array of docking ports, this versatile computer gives the user compact ease of use and full featured capacity as it lands at the top of the computer food chain by its growing popularity.

The fact that some PC tablets have all of the capabilities of both a full-size notebook PC and fully-featured PDA with the flexible attribute of its smaller and thinner size than a regular notebook computer makes it an ideal choice for the modern technologically savvy computer user. Generally, these tablet PC’s are quite pricey but less expensive models have come into the market at the same time as their popularity has risen.

The newer, cheaper offerings of the PC Tablet are well-made and have similar specifications to the pricier offerings such as Apple’s iPad; consumers opting to choose these cheaper models simply have to engage in careful shopping to ensure that they are receiving the capabilities that they expect to receive in the cheaper machines. While the cheap tablet PC’s are not as feature-rich as the pricier versions, with careful shopping and insistence on the presence of the most important features, the flexibility of having a tablet PC is still preserved even when choosing one of the cheaper models.

The tablet PC’s come in two configurations; the one you choose will be dictated in part by the uses you will have for it. Both are capable of handling the computing tasks formerly only capable of being performed by laptops, netbooks, or some PDA’s. These two styles are referred to as “the convertible” and “the slate.” Although they share common features, each is unique and has unique characteristics which make it stand out.

The convertible model is exactly what it says: it is a configuration which at one point resembles the familiar laptop appearance, but then has the capability to quickly convert and change its shape by swiveling into another configuration altogether. The act of swiveling allows the screen to be directed toward the observers, rather than the observers being required to look in the direction the screen is pointed. The screen sits up just as a conventional laptop does.

The slate format, on the other hand, is perfectly flat, as its name “slate” implies. The slate model has its own keyboard for use in navigating the many functions it can perform. The slate is the more portable of the two types, as it can easily be tucked flat into a briefcase and requires almost no room to fit, as flat as it is. This model does not feature a keyboard, but instead uses a stylus or fingers for input of data

Most of the current tablets today run a special version of Windows XP, which has been specially modified to run on these small marvels with the use of a stylus to navigate the program. As the slate only has stylus capability, this modification of XP is what enables it to compete with the keyboard feature available on the convertible format. Both models are endowed with exceptional memory capacity, which affects the speed of the processor and the capacity to store information, as well.

More recent slate models are coming into the market with the Android operating system or the Apple proprietary OS4. Google is also rumored to be developing a tablet OS based on its new Chrome browser.

An exciting occurrence on the computer technology horizon is the recent acquisition of Palm, Inc. by HP, which has long been a leader in technology innovation. With this acquisition, HP has gained ownership of the Palm WebOS technology, an operating system known for its exceptional features. Palm, Inc. has been a leader in PDA and smart phone technology for many years and acquiring this technology puts HP in a prime position to become part of the tablet computing craze!

Many of the same apps which are standard on the larger laptops are now available on the tablet models, with their large memory capacity and many docking ports. It is possible to get such features as voice recognition technology, an extended battery life lasting up to and beyond ten hours, a built-in speaker, microphone, and headset adaptor, and a complete Wi-Fy system with Bluetooth capacity. It is also possible to get a feature in Windows models which allows the user to write input in digital ink and then store it using the Windows Journal; as such models use a stylus as a means of inputting information into the system; this feature may be found on both models.

When looking for and ultimately selecting a cheap tablet PC to fill your joint needs of flexibility and computing capacity, you do not need to sacrifice any of the key features important to your work that you desire in order to keep the price down and make the acquisition affordable. You can find a unit that will meet your needs and fit your budget—a win/win situation for all involved. It is essential at the beginning of your search to be mindful not only of your projected budget, but more importantly, what features are indispensible to the success of the business or personal use of the machine, and which ones you must have to make you satisfied with your purchase.
