Bosses day 2011: Gift ideas for Bosses Day

What is the BEST gift for Bosses Day 2011? A toy of course. Look for toys on Amazon or toysRus. Toys inject fun and produce a smile from the most serious of bosses and lets face it, you could do with a smile. They also send a strong message: "Lighten up and give me a big RAISE." I would advise any kind of frivolous toy. The more frivolous the better. Bubbles for men and helicopters for women, play dough for both. Something with bright colors and shameless kiddie energy.

If that is not the best route for you, then look on Amazon and do it while you are at work. You want to get paid while you are doing this right? Look in the bestseller lists if you are totally out of ideas. Amazon is ginormous after all. Every kind of gift is listed and some you probably did not want to think of. My advice is not to think too much. Buy something with a lot of 4 - 5 star reviews - the average should not be below 4. In that way you are guaranteed to find something that a lot of people like. After all, how many people leave a review on Amazon? Very few, right. So that means that a product with lots of reviews will be making LOTS of sales. Cut to the chase, buy it. Have it mailed right to your desk. Put your feet up and wait for the smile on the 16th.

Boss's day for 2011 - What is the exact date? Put Saturday October 16, 2011 in your diary as the EXACT date to make your boss love you.

By the way the correct spelling is Boss's day!

Bosses Day 2011

Apart from people who are optimistic enough to find positivity in everything that comes their way, there are people who question why is there a day for every other thing. Father's day and Mother's day make sense but why is there a bosses day, which has a very lesser significance as compared to the other celebrated days. The answer to this question lies in understanding the essence of relationships, whether professional or family oriented. Every relationship should be respected and if not the whole year, at least one day should be dedicated to hail its existence. How does that help? That helps in strengthening the bonds between personnel, a boss and his employee in this case.

The internal scenario of many organizations reveals dislike in the hearts of the employees for their bosses, since many of the bosses are, well, 'bossy' and not many people are cool with having a commanding figure over their heads giving it a constant headache. But what needs to be realized is the fact that the corporate ladder can never be climbed higher with a negative or even an average feedback and recommendation for an employee's boss. For such a reason, no matter how full your heart is with dislike for your boss, you still have to keep him happy and contented. This is where the Bosses Day comes in. If you hadn't found a positive reason as to why this day should exist, I'm pretty sure you have one now.

Now, a person may be interested in knowing the history of this day. The day came into existence way back in 1958. The sole credit for the day's creation is given to an employee of State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Patricia Bays Haroski. Interestingly, her boss was none other than her father. This gave her a clear idea what pressure and torture a boss has to go through. She then decided to pay tribute to his hard work by showing her admiration, respect and appreciation. In order to make this idea global, she registered the holiday with the Chamber of Commerce of United States. October 16 was the date chosen by her for this day since her father's birthday fell on this day. The day was formally accepted when the Governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, welcomed the proposal of observing National Boss' Day in 1962. Since that time till today, this day is celebrated worldwide on 16th October. If the day falls on a weekend, then the closest weekday is chosen to celebrate it so the bosses could enjoy a day off from work. However, Hallmark did not offer a Boss day card until 1979. This was because of the lesser popularity of the day then. But now, Hallmark along with 123greetings and American Greetings are offering well designed and innovative cards in full throttle.

So far, I've made you familiar with the history and the reasons as to why one should celebrate National Bosses Day. Lets now focus on how we can actually do that. The all time favorite methods of wishing your boss is sending him or her cards, flowers, gift certificates or taking the person out for lunch or dinner. However, everything depends upon the likes and dislikes of your boss. If you know your boss well enough, you would probably have a fair idea of the things he or she would like. If you don't know your boss well enough, you should rather go for the conventional items and keep your fingers crossed. The second most important thing is the gender. I personally know a few male bosses who do not like receiving flowers as gifts that much. Things like these should be considered when selecting a gift for your boss.

If seen inside an office, employees usually do not know their bosses that well. So what should they go for when selecting a gift? From my experience, you have a few options. One of the options is selecting a card for your boss. If your boss likes to joke around and live in a happy atmosphere, its amazing to find a card with a humorous context, However, if your boss keeps the environment rather serious, a decent and a formal card is advised. Where to find a good card? I would recommend Hallmark. However, if your boss is on a tour or if you can't meet him physically, sending a card online is another good option. 123Greetings and American Greetings provide excellent services for such a purpose.

Another option is to give or send flowers to your boss. This option works like a charm if your boss is a female. However, it may or may not work with male bosses depending upon their liking and disliking. Which flower to go for? I would recommend going for lily for females and blue roses for males. How you present the flowers is another very important aspect. If you enjoy a good relationship with your boss, you can surprise him by sending a flower bucket to his house with a decent note attached with it. If you do not, you should rather send a flower bucket to your boss in person.

Another option is gift certificates. When going for this option, extra care need to be provided since your boss might or might not like what you choose for him.  A safe bet would be a decoration piece or a household item. This works for both male and female bosses. The last among the most common options is taking your boss out for lunch or dinner. This can be done collectively with the other colleagues and separately as well. This too, depends upon your relation with your boss. If its good, a separate surprise dinner or lunch would be awesome. If not, a collective lunch or dinner with approval from your boss would work just fine.

Where people might take this day as to improve their reputation in the eyes of their bosses, the pure essence of this day is the provision of appreciation and admiration. If exercised with the right intentions, this day can prove out to strengthen the bonds between the employees and the boss, producing a healthy working environment.
